Every year, before we eat, my family goes around our dining table and says one thing we are thankful for. In the tradition of this, I wanted to know what our peers and teachers were thankful for. From the people that responded, I picked five respondents answers to share.
First, we have an unnamed 9th grader’s response. He said, “I’m thankful for all my friends and family.” While this seems like a generic response, it holds more weight than most people realize. Our friends and family are our support systems in this world. Who do you tell your problems to? Who do you ask for advice? Your friends and family, that’s who. Often times they go unthanked and under appreciated even though they are such big parts of our lives. So this Thanksgiving, make sure to thank your friends and family.
Mr. Everett responded first saying, “[I am thankful for my] 20th wedding anniversary with my wife Stephanie.” This is a wonderful sentiment, and a reminder to be thankful to those who we love most. Beyond your friends and family, is there anyone that makes you happy whenever you see them? Thank them.
An unnamed 8th grader responded saying, “This Thanksgiving, as cliché as it sounds, I am thankful that my family gets to be together. My family lives a busy life so finding a time where we’re all together is tough. I am also thankful for their endless support. As an athlete I know that some games are rather boring to play in, and I can’t imagine having to watch them. Their support keeps me going and I would be nothing without them. I am so fortunate that I cannot count all of my blessings!” She is so right. Many families are very busy especially during school, so it is important to have time to talk and relax together. And for the athletes out there, chances are your family comes to watch you. Do they have to? Absolutely not. But they do, because they love you. So this Thanksgiving, cherish the time you have together with your family, because chances are you don’t have very much of it, and make sure to thank them for finding time in their busy schedule to support you at games and other activities.
The last teacher that responded was Mrs. Nastasi. She said, “A roof over my head, and time with family and friends. During Thanksgiving break is a great time to relax and rejuvenate, in order to better reflect on all of the blessings we enjoy each day.” She has a good point, Thanksgiving is a great time to relax and realize the blessing we have every day. Instead of being thankful on just Thanksgiving, try to take time out of every day to be thankful and realize the comforts and blessing we enjoy.
The last student that responded was a freshman named Emily. She said, “I am thankful for many different things, but one thing I am especially thankful for is my field hockey team. I have made so many amazing friendships throughout the season that will last a lifetime. I am also thankful for our dedicated coaches who have put so much into the sport and helped us to improve and have a great season.” While her gratitude was rather specific, this can be applied to anyone who tries to make you a better person. Coaches and teachers are just a few people dedicated to improving you, whether it be in sports or academics. Make sure to thank them this Thanksgiving, because they do not have to help you, they choose to.
The students and teachers here at Greenwood are full of gratitude. Let’s show this thankfulness this holiday season, and show the people who help and support us how thankful we are of them.
