Earth Day

Earth Day is approaching, so in honor, I will be sharing some history/facts, and ways to celebrate this year! Gaylord Nelson was the person to come up with the idea of Earth Day. He got this idea after seeing the damage caused by a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969. Nelson then began to educate about the environment. He got Denis Hayes who was a recent graduate of Stanford and politically active to be national coordinator. U.S. Rep. Pete McCloskey of California was co-chairman. People gathered to discuss ways to defend the planet, and Universities held a protest. With 85 staff members, 20 million people were involved on April 20, 1970. Here are some ways you can get involved this Earth Day!

1) Gather your friends and go for a trash walk

2) Create recycling bins to place in certain areas

3) Plant a garden

4) Go on a hike

5) Ride your bike instead of driving to reduce pollution
