An article dedicated entirely to my one true love.
Hummus, one of the greatest gifts humanity has to offer. This smooth, creamy dip is the power source that keeps this earth spinning. Hummus is the peak of culinary genius. No blend of ingredients will ever be able to outshine the unique and sensational flavor of this beloved dip. By now you may be asking, what exactly is hummus and why is it so great? Well, faithful reader of Greenwood’s own blog, I am very glad you asked because you are in for an extra special treat. Sit down, buckle up, and get ready for an exciting adventure into the world of hummus.
Let us begin with the humble roots of this almighty dip. Some of the earliest mentions of hummus date back to Egypt in the 13th century, yet many other countries have a long history with this iconic spread. The ancient Greek philosophers, Plato and Socrates, made reference to the great nutritional value of hummus in their diets. Hummus is also very commonly eaten in the Middle East, so much so that the word hummus means chickpea in Arabic. It seems as though hummus is nearly as old as the chickpea itself.
Despite its fame in other parts of the world, hummus wasn’t popular in the United States until 1986, when a man by the name of Zohar Norman decided to start marketing this delicious dip. His company, Sabra, would come to be the leading producer of hummus to this day. Since then, hummus has claimed a spot in the hearts (and fridges) of many Americans.
Not only is hummus delicious, but it also has many great nutritional benefits too. When paired with a whole grain like pita bread, hummus is a complete protein, making it very useful in vegan and vegetarian diets. Hummus is also high in fiber which promotes bowel health and helps to control blood sugar levels. Key vitamins like iron, magnesium, and vitamin C can also be found in hummus too.
The traditional ingredients of hummus are chickpeas, tahini (a paste made from ground sesame seeds), garlic, olive oil, salt, and lemon juice. Many variations of this classic dish exist, such as roasted red pepper, sundried tomato basil, and even dessert hummus. Some of my favorite hummus recipes include…
In conclusion, hummus is amazing and life would be a million times worse without it. If you’ve never tried hummus, come out from the rock you’ve been living under and taste the raw power of this omnipotent dip.
