At 6:43 pm (12:43 ET) Monday, one of the most historic cathedrals started to burn. It then continued to burn for over 12 more hours. Through those 12 hours, the spire on this cathedral collapsed to the ground and there was many groups of people who stood nearby singing hymns while watching it burn. That cathedral was the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, France.
The Fire
On Monday April 15 a fire was reported in the roof near the spire at 6:43 pm. This was the second time that the alarms had gone off. The alarms went off 6:20 pm, but after a search there was no fires reported. When they went off again was when the fire was noticed.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and after over 12 hours of burning, they were able to put the fire out. During those 12 hours, the spire had collapsed causing people to be in shock as they continued to watch the historic cathedral burn.
While extensive damage was done to the roof and spire, the two towers in the front and other areas around the bottom of Notre-Dame were not extensively damaged.
Rebuilding
Many millionaires and billionaires in France and also from other countries have pledged millions of dollars towards rebuilding Notre-Dame.
Some of those people include: the family who owns the L’oreal company, the richest man in France, and a Luxury goods company. WIth the combination of these families and companies and others over night over $650 million Euros had been raised.
At this time there is no amount known to how much it will cost to rebuild Notre-Dame.
