With the first Color Guard practice being April 3, we figured that we could answer some potential questions for anyone interested in joining.

What is Color Guard?

Color Guard is a part of the Greenwood Marching Band that performs at some pep rallies, a football game, and parades using flags, mini flags, or wooden rifles.

Who can join Color Guard?

We accept people from 8th - 12th grade. Since our season extends into the fall, if you're in 7th grade now, you can also join since you’ll be an 8th grader for the majority of the season.

Do you need any experience?

You do not need any prior experience to join Color Guard. We teach you all the different moves that would be used in a routine and how to march in a parade. All we need from you is a willingness to learn and patience. Moves can always be modified to accommodate your experience and comfortability.

What level of commitment does Color Guard entail?

Color Guard has a very low commitment with practice being once a week from 3-5. We do at least seven different events during a season such as the PECO Fair, Greenwood Night, the Homecoming Pep Rally, and the Homecoming game. We do the same events every year with the newest addition of a pep rally in the spring.

What are practices like?

Practices are pretty chill with what we do changing depending on what performance is coming up. Spring is usually practicing for Memorial Day, practicing for the third quarter recognition pep rally, and routines for any new songs we are given. Routine creation is usually only something that Mrs. Haefner and long time members work on. You are free to give your suggestions and input but don’t feel obligated to if you’re not comfortable. We don’t expect people to help with routines when they’ve just joined.

Do I need to provide any equipment?

The only thing you need to provide is black sneakers and any snack you would want at practice. We give you the flagpoles, flags, uniforms, and wooden rifles.

We really look forward to having new faces this spring so if you have any questions not covered here, please email Mrs. Haefner or talk to one of our four seniors Arykah Hahn, Hannah Morrison, Jordyn Turnbaugh, or Maddie Graybill.
