The Legacy of MLK

Black American civil rights leader Martin Luther King (1929 - 1968) addresses crowds during the March On Washington at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC, where he gave his 'I Have A Dream' speech.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

Every year, we have a day where we celebrate the legacy of an influential man whose messaged invoked change into our nation. His ideas still live on to this day, and we must ensure that they will never fall silent. In honor of MLK day this Monday, I encourage you to not just view it as a nice day off, but use your presence to continue the change that Martin Luther King Jr. so bravely promoted as he was standing behind the podium giving his “I Have a Dream” speech, 56 years ago.

Martin Luther King Jr. no doubt lived an extraordinary life. He established himself as a national leader in the civil rights movement when he began speaking out about prejudices prominent in the south. He lead boycotts and protests, invoking sparks of change against segregation.

I encourage you to educate yourself this MLK day. Listen to his impactful speech, and read more about his life an legacy. Most importantly, invest your time in community service. MLK’s message of loving one another is essential, and is needed when we are stuck in chaos. Donate food to a local shelter, speak up about issues you care about, talk to people whom you usually don't, and most importantly, BE KIND.

Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?”
