The Winter Outlook

We are only half-way through November and we have already had TWO days off of school due to the snow. One can only wonder if this snow is going to stay constant throughout the entire winter? Or is it just hitting us early then leaving? If you are a snow lover or a person who likes to stay inside with some hot cocoa, I have what to expect from this winter!

The breakdown for this winter comes from PA Weather Action and they use a series of models and analogs. Warmer sea surface temperatures over the Equatorial Pacific is going to allow for an active sub-tropical jet stream. So what does this mean? This means that there may be lower temperatures than average over the central and eastern United States. This also means that there will be a larger chance of storms coming from the Gulf of Mexico and traveling up the coast. These storms could bring precipitation, snow or rain, and colder temperatures. Coastal states will be more likely to just get rain though because the Atlantic Ocean is slightly warmer than average. This is a summary of six different analogs, soon PA Weather Action will slim down that list to have an even better prediction!

Now that I have become an amateur meteorologist, I can say that being one is no easy job! This winter you should expect colder than average temperatures with average or slightly below average precipitation. Remember if you are snow lover, this doesn’t mean there will be less snow, precipitation also includes snow. I suggest everyone gets a nice cozy blanket to stay bundled up in this winter.
