Not only was this past fall filled with all sorts of back-to-school activities, but it was also loaded with athletic accomplishments through a variety of six different sports. There are six different fall sports that students have the opportunity to be a part of. They are cheerleading, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, and soccer. Football and golf are combined with Newport and the Greenwood athletes play for Newport. On the other hand, the soccer team is also combined with Newport and the Newport athletes play for Greenwood. With this in mind, there is a lot of talent that fills each of these teams. With no further ado, let’s dive into them!
CHEERLEADING
The cheerleading squad had a very successful first part of the season as they were crowned PECO champions. With Districts, as well as sideline cheer for basketball games quickly approaching, the work has not slowed down for them.
CROSS COUNTRY
The cross country team had a very successful year. The top three female places at PECO all belonged to members of the team. To round things out at the end of the season, John Taylor, Levi Lower, Amiah Barner, and Laylani Shanchez attended the PIAA District 3 Cross Country Championships.
Closing Remarks: “This xc season was overall good for the whole team. Our team grew throughout the season and I would say that we all definitely became stronger runners as the season went on. Not only did we work hard as individuals but we worked well with each other as well.” -Amiah Barner
FIELD HOCKEY
The field hockey team finished with an overall record of 4-11-2. This effort ended up placing the team third in the Tri-Valley League. In addition, Naomi Lyter, Sophie Myers, and Hannah Shiffer were all placed on the First Team for the Tri-Valley League at the conclusion of the season.
Closing Remarks: “This may not have been the season we hoped for but we made the most out of what we were given and I’m so proud of how much we improved. I’m glad we got to play together as a team and it was exciting to see everyone grow individually and collectively.” -Naomi Lyter
FOOTBALL
The football team finished with an overall record of 1-9. Specifically from Greenwood, Noah Weller made 1st team Offensive Line, and Wilson Hartley made 2nd team Defensive End and 3rd team Tight End for the Mid Penn Liberty Division All-Stars.
Closing Remarks: “We had a tough year going 1-9. I feel the team took a big step forward and will be better prepared for next year's football season.” -Wilson Hartley
GOLF

Unable to snag a win, the golf team was in a time of transition. Filled with underclassmen and several inexperienced upperclassmen, there was a learning curve that the team had to get over this year. Even though the results were not there, there was development in all six of the members of the team. Till the end of the season, they were pushing East Juniata’s team scores.
Closing Remarks: “Even though the golf season is always so short, the underclassman showed a huge amount of improvement as the season went on. They all faced a lot of pressure from the beginning with there being such a small team but they handled it very well. I can guarantee that trend will continue into next season.” -Drew Bratton
SOCCER
The soccer team finished with an overall record of 19-1-1. This effort gave the team a Tri-Valley League and PECO title. In addition, the team qualified for the PIAA District 3 Soccer Championships and ended up reaching the semi-finals. Individually, Lucas Beaver, Nicholas Stuck, and Kyle Corkle were all named First Team All-Stars in the Tri-Valley League. Evan Rice and Mason Preston were also named Second Team All-Stars and Nicholas Stuck was awarded the Most Valuable Player Award in the league.
Closing Remarks: “I would say we had a pretty successful season. From being undefeated, winning PECO and TVL, as well as making it to the district semi-final, our team did very well. We overcame some obstacles with a few people being injured but, in the end, we had a great season.” -Mason Preston
As you can see, there has been success and improvement in all aspects of fall sports here at Greenwood. Even though these seasons flew by, sports never truly come to an end. Believe it or not, basketball and wrestling seasons have already begun. Just like the fall sports, success is brewing in each of these teams. Make sure to get out and help fill the Roar Zone at the basketball games and make the trip over to Newport to support all of the wrestlers this coming winter season! If you ever have any questions regarding what the theme is or who is playing on a certain date, make sure to check out the Roar Zone on Instagram (@ghsroarzone).
