Have you ever roamed the halls of Greenwood High and taken a moment to admire the artwork adorning the halls? If you have, you most likely were struck with awe at all of the amazing talent that exists within our school. Obviously, our athletics and academics are phenomenal but not nearly enough attention is given to the multitude of artists that quietly roam the halls.
Through this column, I hope to highlight the talented students at this school and show that not only are our academics and athletics exceptional, but so are our artists.
In this second publication, I spoke with senior Riley Bennett. Without further ado, let’s get into the interview!
1.Describe the work you do.
“I tend to do more humorous art works when I get the chance to. I’m not into hidden meanings and serious pieces, I like to have fun with my art so that others will have fun looking at it in return.”
2. How did you get introduced to art?
“I was introduced into the arts by my parents, they’re both super artistic.”
3. Describe your idea of artistic success.
“My idea of artistic success is being happy in what you’re creating and continuing to better your artistic talent.”
4. How do you generate new ideas for pieces?
“I just sit there and stare at a wall until I think of something random that catches my attention and then go from there. Having prompts really helps too, to try and limit what ideas are going through your head. If I need a prompt I usually just go up to someone and say, ‘Hey, what should I draw?’”
5. How do you feel when people view your art?
“I think people view my art as something fun and interesting, that’s how I like to try and view it.”
6. How would you like your art to be viewed?
“I’d like it to be viewed as something humorous and impressive. Kind of two different views but I want my artwork to be fun and engaging, not flat and boring.”
7. Do your future plans involve art?
“Yes they do! I’d love to go and get my degree in Art Education then one day come back to teach at Greenwood. When I’m feeling really motivated I like to think I’ll go back to school and get my doctorate to become a professor and teach art.”
Here are a few artworks that Riley created:
“The first was picture is a pencil drawing I did of my mom being silly. I’ll just call it “Mom Being Weird”.”
“The second is a dichromatic painting I did of my dad and I when I was a baby. Titled “Dad”, it was for his birthday.”
“The third picture is a coil pottery piece which is usually the first type of pottery we make in Mrs. Deimler’s art class. I’ve done this project so many times that I had decided to try something different this year. My piece is called “Melting” based off “The Persistence of Memory” by Salvador Dali.”
