Artist Spotlight

Have you ever roamed the halls of Greenwood High and taken a moment to admire the artwork adorning the halls? If you have, you most likely were struck with awe at all of the amazing talent that exists within our school. Obviously, our athletics and academics are phenomenal but not nearly enough attention is given to the multitude of artists that quietly roam the halls.

Through this column, I hope to highlight the talented students at this school and show that not only are our academics and athletics exceptional, but so are our artists.

In this third publication, I spoke with junior Emily McGowan. Without further ado, let’s get into the interview!

1.Describe the work you do.

“I prefer to do work on paper medium such as ink, watercolor, and sketching. However, I also enjoy sculpture and other mediums on occasion.”

2. How did you get introduced to art?

“I have always drawn for the fun of it. However, I feel like I really started to improve and take art seriously when I was around 10-12 years old.”

3. Describe your idea of artistic success.

“I guess I could say that being able to keep creating and improving far into the future would be success enough.”

4. How do you generate new ideas for pieces?

“There are a lot of influences in my work like nature, music, and stories. I’ve found that being in an active community of artists has really helped me develop my craft.”

5. How do you feel when people view your art?

“I don’t really care what people think about my art, so I’ve never really thought about it.”

6. How would you like your art to be viewed?

“I hope that my work evokes as much joy in people as I had making it, and that they see the time, thought, and effort put into it.”

7. Do your future plans involve art?

“I plan to keep art as a part of my future, I’m deciding its involvement in my career path.”

Description of three works:

“The first picture is a piece I did for an art challenge called “Inktober” where an artist would make a piece of art everyday of October, completely in ink. For this prompt I had done a creature from German folklore, the Nachtkrapp.”

“The second was a holiday piece of me and a friend that I did using water-based ink markers and brushes.”

“The third is a sculpture of a harbor seal I did for one of my classes. The base is made of clay, then painted with acrylic. I used different shades of grey to make the ‘freckled’ detailing.”
