Caring for Mental Health After High School

If you are a senior, that means that you will soon graduate, and finally be finished with high school. You are now ready for the next step in your life. Just the thought of this is stressful. You may find yourself asking, “What do I want to do with my life?”, “How will I succeed?”. It will be hard to find the answer to these questions. Honestly you may never find any answers to the meaning of your life, but that’s not important. What is important is that you are happy, you do the things you love, and recognize the beauty of the world. So whether if you are off to college, or you haven’t decided yet, it is important to take care of yourself. Your life is just getting started, and there is so much excitement to come. Here are some tips to wind down in this hectic transition of your life:

  1. Value Yourself

Treat yourself with kindness and respect, and avoid self-criticism. Make time for your hobbies and favorite projects, or broaden your horizons. Be proud of your accomplishments, and respect who you truly are.

2. Take Care of Your Body

Taking care of yourself physically can improve your mental health. Be sure to: - Eat nutritious meals -Drink plenty of water -Exercise, which helps decrease depression and anxiety and improve moods -Get enough sleep. Researchers believe that lack of sleep contributes to a high rate of depression in college students

3. Surround Yourself with Good People

It is important to find friends who are supportive and listen to you. Sometimes, it is a good thing to get rid of the people in your life who bring you down, and fill you with toxic thoughts. It can help to seek out activities or groups to meet new people with the same interests and aspirations as you.

4. Quiet Your Mind

It is essential, especially when life feels like it’s moving too fast, to slow down and be present. Practice mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and any other techniques to calm yourself down. Focus on simple and beautiful things like; watching a sunset, breathing in fresh air, or listening to the chirping of birds. Also try journaling! It can offer a relaxing release from reality, and allows you to organize thoughts.

5. Set Realistic Goals

I think the biggest mistake we make is putting to much pressure on ourselves. Be sure to push your limits and take risks, but don’t expect so much of yourself. Recognize your abilities, and take things easy. Over achieving can do more harm than good sometimes.
