Even if you’re not a soccer fan, I’m sure you’ve heard her name before. Winning two Olympic gold medals and two world cup titles, Carli Lloyd has become a common household name. On August 16th, the soccer star announced her retirement. Along with her many accomplishments and the impact she has had on the beautiful game, Carli was sure to leave a legacy that will never be forgotten.
Carli began to play soccer at the age of 5. At the time, the team she played on was co-ed, so her determination to be the best showed at a young age. She was always a hard worker, and had big goals she wanted to reach. Carli’s biggest goal, to play for the U.S. Women's National Team was inspired by attending a game during the 1999 Women’s World Cup. She was determined to make her dream come true, but it came with obstacles. Throughout her career, she was told she wasn’t fit enough, that she was too slow, and that she could never be the best player in the world. When asked by one of her coaches what her goals were, she told him it was to be the best player in the world. He laughed at her, and in that moment she knew she had to prove him wrong. She had to prove all her doubters wrong. Her chance to do so came on July 10th, 2005 when she made her senior national team debut. Carli then
scored her first goal for the team on October 1, 2006. But this was only the beginning. She went on to make 316 appearances with the team, and scored 134 goals.
Although she had a great career, what sticks out to me the most is the impact she left. Her determination and ability to overcome obstacles has inspired many, including myself. She has also inspired her teammates, and I had the honor of talking with Estelle Johnson, Carli’s teammate on the National Women’s Soccer League club Gotham FC to learn more about the impact she’s had.
What is one word you would use to describe Carli?
“Determined.”
What is your favorite memory with Carli?
“One time she told me I was the best center back in the league - although that was a long time ago, it still gives me confidence to know that Carli Lloyd recognized & appreciated my skill.”
What are you going to miss most about having Carli as a teammate?
“I’ll miss the pressure she applied to the rest of the team to perform. Good pressure.”
As you can see, Carli has left an impact on many people. Not only has she left an impact on others, but also an everlasting impact on women’s soccer that will improve the game for future generations. I am so thankful I was able to watch Carli play throughout her incredible career, and she will be missed out on the field.
