GHS Basketball: Senior Night Spotlight

Senior night is used to celebrate our athletes and their accomplishments. On February 11, GHS Basketball seniors Mikey Strohm, Brennan Miller, Thomas Pyle, and Avery Morder led their team to a 51-35 victory over the Newport Buffalos. The game had a slow start, but started to pick up with a few Wildcat breakaways from Tyler Sherman and Avery Morder. These led to a couple of points for the Wildcat side and got the game rolling. Layups from both teams started to land, and the Buffalos had few missed 3 point shots. In the second period, the Wildcats controlled possession, and went into the half up 22-20. After a close first half, Thomas Pyle got the second half rolling with a couple 3 point shots. There was a lot of back and forth on the court with little scoring. The Wildcats defense stood strong and kept Newport from scoring. Even when up, Greenwood kept possession and pressure high until the end of the game. When asked what this season has taught him, senior captain Avery Morder said “I’ve learned that teamwork is most important when playing, if we’re not playing as one our win probability drops significantly.” When asked what one of his favorite basketball memories was, he said “I don’t have one specific basketball memory, it's just a collection of playing basketball with the same group of guys since we were in 4th grade, I’ve grown up with these guys and you can tell our chemistry really shows on the court.”

The next night, GHS Basketball seniors Ella Brummer, Emilie Brinser, Abby Taylor, Madison Howell, and Alli Crockett led their team to a 66-49 victory also over the Newport Buffalos. The Wildcats had a strong start with Emilie Brinser forcing a turnover early in the first period. Throughout the quarter, there was a lot of back and forth on both sides of the court. The Wildcats were able to convert five 3 point shots in the first half, made by Ella Brummer and Alli Crockett. The Greenwood side went in with a dominating lead at halftime, 34-19. The second half was full of converted baskets for the Wildcats. Their foul shots had almost 100% accuracy, with perfect accuracy from Sarah Pennay, Alli Crockett, and Abby Taylor. To end the game, Madison Howell forced a turnover. When asked what this season taught her, senior captain Abby Taylor said “I’ve learned to roll with the punches. Any negative situation that is thrown at me must be received with adaptability. The ability to keep on going and stick together despite what happens is what makes a team good. I’m so proud of my teammates for the way each of them have really stuck to this.” When asked what one of her favorite basketball memories was, she said “I will miss the way the coaches believed in me, and this team so fiercely. They never give up on us. My favorite memory is when the girl’s wig

fell off in the state game.” Congratulations to all of the GHS Basketball seniors!
