Jumping over the block

So, you’re sitting at your desk ready to create a masterpiece that will change the world. You have your sketch/notebook, markers, paints, colored pencils, pens, and then you run into a slight problem. You have absolutely no idea what do draw or what to write. As you sit there and stare at the blank page with no idea where to start you begin to think, “I am making no progress and getting nowhere. Well this is the end of my young, short lived career in creating.” Well you can now stop thinking that because I am here to tell you that there are several ways to get over your blank mind and get that idea that could possibly inspire others.

To start off you could change up your routine a little bit, and it may sound strange at first, but if you truly think about it it makes sense. By changing your normal routine you’re putting yourself in situations that you normally wouldn’t be in. In the long run it would expose you to new things, allow you to hear things you’ve never heard before, and learn things you wouldn’t have if you would have stuck to your normal routine. Everything new you see and hear can help inspire you to draw something you saw or even write about something new you learned. Or if that doesn’t help, why not try something new.

Instead of tying yourself down to one particular thing try different things. Yeah you’re probably thinking that you already know all this information about how to create in whatever it is you like to do, but you also have no idea what you want to create. This being said if you are a writer and decide that you want to draw a picture, right there is a story in itself. Or if you normally draw and decide you want to write a story, whatever you wrote about can easily be turned into a drawing or painting. Either way try something new because even if you know nothing about it it only takes a little distraction to stir up some new ideas. If this doesn’t work maybe you’re just a tired and your brain needs a break.

Now you’re probably tired of being told to go to sleep at a decent hour and get a goods nights rest, but it’s true. As you sleep your mind process everything that has happened throughout the day, so if you are going about your life on two hours of sleep there's not a lot being processed. This could be a big problem if you’re a creator because if you aren’t processing everything your brain is going to enter into a fog and your going to lose all your ideas. By getting enough sleep you’re not only bettering your body and letting it repair itself, but you’re also allowing your brain to think freely and figure things out. When this happens you’re going to be more likely to get new ideas and have a more free mind allowing more ideas to come to you. Sometimes though you do have an idea and you are just scared to mess it up.

When creating you have to remember that you can’t act too precious about it. If you are constantly fearing that you are going to mess it up then you are just going to put yourself in a problem situation. You have to be able to embrace what you are doing and just have fun, and if you never mess up or try it you are never going to be able to grow as a creator. You can’t expect yourself to be perfect and just by letting yourself get your small ideas out it can create even more larger ideas.. In the end all you have to do is remember to have fun.
