Spooky Unsolved Mysteries

As humans, it is our natural instinct to make sense and find reason in things. But what if we are faced with an instance that is completely unexplainable? Not even science or deep research could explain. We are left in the dark and stuck in the depths of the unknown.

To set the mood for October, what’s better than hearing some unexplained spooky stories? Sit back, and get ready to be shook, because these unsolved mysteries will send chills down your spine.

Let's dive in.

The Incident at Dyatlov Pass

It was the first night of February 1959, nine hikers mysteriously died in the mountains of what is now known as Russia. The group had set up camp on a slope, enjoyed dinner, and prepared for sleep- hoping to wake up the next day, ready for adventure. Little did they know, that night, they would meet an unfortunate fate, caused by mysterious circumstances.

On February 26, detectives found the hikers’ abandoned tent, which had been ripped open from the inside. Strange findings were discovered in the surrounding area. There were footprints left by the group, some wearing socks, some wearing a single shoe, some barefoot, all of which continued to the edge of a nearby woods. This is where two of the bodies were found. At first, the scene seemed to be an evident proof of death from hypothermia, but as medical examiners looked deeper, and examined the rest of the bodies found, they discovered that this cause of death did not make sense. In fact, the evidence did not add up to one reasonable explanation. One body had evidence of a blunt force trauma consistent with a brutal assault; another had third-degree burns; one had been vomiting blood; one was missing a tongue, and some of their clothing was found to be radioactive.

Theories soon started to arise, trying to make sense of what happened to this group of hikers that one strange night. Was it extraterrestrial activity? Did these people simply fall into insanity from the harsh environmental conditions? Till this day, this case remains a mystery.

Area 51

On the note of “extraterrestrials”, our next unsolved mystery is the conspiracy of “Area 51”. Most likely, all of us have heard stories of this strange and secretive location. Turns out, these theories may, in fact, be true.

Area 51, located in southern Nevada, is a U.S. military base that’s the very existence of which was unconfirmed until 2013. Based on historical evidence, Area 51 is a place which supports the development and testing of experimental aircraft and weapons. Public satellite images, do not provide insight into this location. It is impossible to find this area on Google Maps, it is totally disclosed from the public eye. Those with the security clearance to travel to Area 51, are required to do with immense secrecy. They are transported to the area through a private airline whose planes are unmarked and which shrouds its windows upon descent.

The immense secrecy, and the government's attempt to hide Area 51 from the public lead to rumors of mysterious activity. Most popular, is the theory that the government uses it to house crashed UFOs and conduct lab tests on aliens. Other theories about what Area 51 is used for include: research on time travel, research on teleportation, meetings with extraterrestrials, development of a means for weather control, and activities related to a shadowy one-world government. Will we ever know the answer to what mysterious things happen in Area 51? We may never know, but these questions definitely feed the imagination and makes for some intriguing conspiracies.

The Pollock Sisters

Whether or not you believe in it, reincarnation is an interesting possibility, and sometimes it can explain the unexplainable. Today, 24 percent of Americans believe in reincarnation. As scientists strive to disprove this idea and do their best to find a reasonable explanation, there are some cases that are so compelling and strange, that even scientists pause when being faced with the facts. That is what we have in the story of the Pollock sisters.

In 1957, two young English sisters, 11-year-old Joanna Pollock, and 6-year-old Jacqueline Pollock died in a tragic car accident. One year later, their mother gave birth to twins, Gillian and Jennifer. From the start, the parents noticed unexplainable coincidences. Jennifer had a birthmark that looked like Jacqueline’s scar, and a second birthmark in the same place as Jacqueline’s birthmark. When the two girls were old enough to talk, strange things began to occur. They were identifying and requesting toys, which they had never seen before, that had belonged to their dead sisters, pointing out landmarks that only their dead sisters would have known, such as the school they’d attended. Sometimes the girls would panic upon seeing cars idling. They once shrieked, “That car is coming to get us!”

As the twins grew older, the strange coincidences dwindled away, and they lived normal lives. But their strange actions that connected them to their dead sisters brought up more questions than answers. Did the Pollock sisters prove reincarnation? Till this day, the reason remains unexplained.

The Disappearance of Cindy Song

With the widespread influence of the media and news, it is now common for us to hear about disturbing stories, such as murders, disappearances, and much more. We find these stories intriguing, and may immerse ourselves to find an answer. In the back of our minds we think, ¨This occurred far away, this will never happen to me, or were I live¨. We view these horrors from a distance, and rarely let ourselves get too frightened by them. But what if something horrible and tragic, occurs in your state. In fact, what if this tragedy occurred very close to you, that it is impossible to get away from. The intensity hits you; it becomes so much more real and terrifying.

In this case, we will be focusing on the disappearance of the Penn State student Cindy Song, who is till this day, missing, and whereabouts unknown.

Hyun Jong Song, known better to her friends as Cindy Song, moved to the States in 1995 after being accepted into Penn State University. In 2001, Cindy was a Senior, and was due to graduate in a few months time. But unfortunately, she would never reach this point. On Halloween night, she attended a party at Players Nite Club with her friends. Her friends then dropped her off at her apartment once the night was over. This was the last time anyone has seen Cindy Song, the next day, it seemed that she had completely disappeared. Police investigated her apartment, and found that most of her belongings were there. The only things missing were her purse, her keys, and Cindy herself.

There was no evidence of a break in at her apartment, this eludes to question about whether she disappeared from her apartment or voluntarily left. There was also no evidence of anything strange that happened that night of the party, Cindy´s friends had no clue of what could have happened. Though, this was not the end of the story. Shortly after the investigation, an eye witness came forward saying that they saw a woman crying for help in a car with a mysterious man. This man was never found by police, and people wondered if this witness's story was genuine. After a long while of confusion and dead ends, something credible was finally discovered. A man who had a history of crime and homicide came forward and confessed to the murder of Cindy Song. He claimed that he had possession of Cindy´s bunny ears that she wore with her costume from the Halloween night of her disappearance, keeping them as a souvenir. This man was charged and held accountable, but after thorough investigation, no evidence of Cindy´s remains were found. There was no crime scene, no body, no trace left of her.

The Mysterious Dog Suicide Bridge

There are places all over the world where strange and unexplained things happen. In Scotland, they have their own peculiar story. Located in an isolated and abandoned forest, is the Overtoun Bridge. It's fame roots from something far from comforting. This bridge seems to mysteriously call dogs to leap to their death. This phenomenon is enough to send chills down your spine.

Since the early 1960s, at the bridge, some 50 canines have perished, and hundreds more have jumped but survived, reports Slate via their Atlas Obscura blog, with some returning for a second leap onto the jagged rocks 50 feet below.

What causes dogs to jump specifically from this bridge? Are they intentionally try to “commit suicide”? The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has sent representatives to investigate but to no avail. In terms of scientific truth, it is debatable, if not incredibly unlikely that dogs are capable of forming an intent to die. Yet, something is luring dogs off that bridge, often from the very same spot, and always on sunny, dry days.

This unexplained mystery has caused many theories to arisen, including that the bridge is haunted. Whatever is causing this phenomenon, there’s no doubt that it's immensely eerie. And whatever you do, I advise you to keep your doggo on a leash. And I advise you that if there is some odd reason you visit this bridge, please leave your little furry guy at home.
