Way back at the beginning of this school year, the Junior Class Officers (Emily Clark, Drew Bratton, Tayla Dusharm, Sam Watts, and Gabe Naimo) alongside their advisor, Mrs. Miller, were starting to plan what they knew would become something big. In addition to the yearly fundraisers, the class officers devoted a lot of time and effort to planning Prom. Things like where the event would be held, as well as food options, were among the first couple of tasks that needed to be figured out. Fast forwarding through the school year, all of this was very stressful at times, but it ended up being worth it. Not only were the officers able to have the venue successfully ready for everyone, but the event itself was such a success. From the moment students started walking through the doors, the energy was already high. Knowing that the chosen theme for the Prom was Written in the Stars, the officers wanted everyone to feel like they were above the clouds as they entered the venue. This was done by hanging stars at the entrance, having a photo backdrop area with a moon, and sheets of white fabric hanging above the dance floor. The place was definitely looking good!
In terms of the specifics, it was held at the Laurelton in Mifflintown on May 13th from 5-10 P.M. With there being around 130 people in attendance, including the chaperones, it was evident that it would be packed, but that did not slow anyone down. Once everyone had gotten their pictures taken before the Prom and everyone was briefly seated at their tables, it was time for dinner. The meal was catered by Mission BBQ and was an absolute hit. The menu included three meats, three sides, and cornbread, but pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, and mashed potatoes were clearly the most popular. After the delicious main course, everyone was delighted with Sweet to the Soul ice cream. After dinner, everyone meandered around for about half an hour until the dance had begun. The DJ for the evening was Kraig from Juke Box Hits. He did an amazing job at keeping the energy high until the end of the night. In doing so, his playlist included some of the most iconic music artists such as Taylor Swift, Lizzo, and Rihanna. After dancing for a couple of hours, it was time for the Prom Royalty to be announced. Kyle Corkle was crowned the Prince, and the Princess was Katie Minium. The King was Tyler Sherman, and then the Queen was Audrey Weger. Once those announcements were made, everyone went back onto the dance floor for one final hurrah. After the final song ended, the class officers were grateful that so many people were willing to help clean up the venue when the Prom was over. Not only this, but they also received a lot of positive feedback from students as well as chaperones. Knowing that the class officers had been planning the event since October, it was great to hear that so many people had such a positive experience to take from it.
After having some time to reflect on such a busy night, the President of the Junior Class, Emily Clark, was asked what her feelings were about the evening.
How do you think Prom went?
Prom went better than I ever imagined it could have gone. Planning it, I had a picture in my head as to what it would turn out to be, and it exceeded those expectations by far. The students were wonderful and respectful as always!
What was your favorite part?
My favorite part would have been the fellowship. It was great to see everyone connecting and hanging out during the meal and then having a blast together during the dancing time.
What made you want to be in charge of such a big event?
I really enjoy planning and organizing events and so Prom was like the cherry on the sundae. It was really neat to collaborate with the other officers and come up with a mental picture of what we wanted Prom to look like and work from there to achieve that picture. Mrs. Miller is a wonderful advisor and guided us officers in the right direction when we weren't sure what steps came next. Looking back on the past 8 months that it took to plan Prom, I would say that they were some of the most stressful but enjoyable out of my school career.
With this in mind, there is no doubt that everyone had a great night. The hard work that was required to make the evening such a memorable night had finally paid off. As a class officer, it meant a lot to see so many smiling faces throughout the evening. Until next year!!
